There is a point in garment development when the fabric arrives and everyone thinks the difficult part is over.

The colour is right. The weight feels right. The surface looks right. It has the hand feel the designer was looking for.

On paper, it is the right fabric.

Then the sample is made.

And somehow, the garment is wrong.

The silhouette feels heavier than expected. The fit has changed. The hem sits differently. The sleeve doesn't fall the way it did in the original sample. A fitted area feels tighter. A seam is pulling where it wasn't supposed to.

Nothing about the design has changed.

The fabric has.

This is one of the reasons material selection needs to be considered much earlier in garment development. A fabric is not a passive surface that sits on top of a pattern. It actively influences how that pattern behaves once it becomes a garment.

The right fabric can still produce the wrong garment when its technical behaviour has not been properly understood.

A fabric is more than its composition

When brands evaluate a fabric, the first information they usually look at is the fibre composition.

100% cotton.

Viscose.

Wool.

Polyester.

Silk.

A blend of several fibres.

Composition is important, but it only tells part of the story.

Two fabrics can have the same fibre composition and behave completely differently.

Their weight can differ.

Their construction can differ.

Their stretch and recovery can differ.

Their drape can differ.

Their dimensional stability can differ.

Their surface friction can differ.

Even the way they respond to pressing and sewing can be different.

This matters because the garment is being designed around behaviour, not simply around composition.

A pattern that works beautifully in one woven fabric may need to be reconsidered when the same silhouette is produced in another fabric with different mechanical properties.

The design may look identical on a moodboard.

The garment will not necessarily be.

Weight changes more than the way a fabric feels

Fabric weight is one of the simplest specifications to overlook because it can seem relatively straightforward.

But weight has a direct relationship with how a garment hangs and moves.

A heavier fabric can create more structure and stability. It can support a sculptural silhouette, but it can also pull on seams and change the way volume sits around the body.

A lighter fabric may create movement and fluidity, but it may not support the same construction or silhouette.

This becomes particularly noticeable in garments with volume.

A skirt with significant fullness can behave completely differently depending on the weight and structure of the fabric. A structured sleeve can lose its shape when developed in a material that cannot support it. A fitted bodice may behave differently when the fabric has more give than originally anticipated.

The pattern has not necessarily become incorrect.

The relationship between the pattern and the material has changed.

Drape is part of the silhouette

Drape is often discussed as an aesthetic quality.

It is also a technical one.

When a designer says they want a garment to feel fluid, soft or sculptural, they are describing how the fabric should behave.

A fabric with high drape will respond to gravity differently from a structured fabric. It will create different folds, different movement and different visual volume.

That means the same pattern can produce very different results.

This is particularly important when a garment relies on controlled volume or a specific relationship between the fabric and the body.

A pattern may be perfectly drafted for the intended measurements and still fail to create the intended silhouette because the material is behaving differently from what the development process assumed.

This is why fabric and pattern development should not be treated as two completely separate decisions.

They are connected from the beginning.

Stretch changes the relationship between body and garment

Stretch introduces another layer of complexity.

A fabric may have a certain percentage of elastane, but that number alone doesn't tell you how the finished garment will behave.

The direction of stretch matters.

The amount of stretch matters.

Recovery matters.

The construction of the fabric matters.

And the way the pattern is developed around that stretch matters.

A fabric that stretches significantly but has poor recovery can behave very differently from a fabric with similar stretch and strong recovery.

For a fitted garment, this can completely change the fit.

A pattern developed with a specific amount of negative ease may work beautifully in one stretch fabric and feel restrictive or loose in another.

This is why stretch fabrics should be assessed through their actual behaviour rather than simply through the composition listed on the supplier's specification sheet.

Shrinkage can change the garment after development

Shrinkage is another issue that can appear deceptively late in the process.

A garment may be measured correctly during development and still change after washing or finishing.

If a fabric shrinks, the finished measurements change.

That can affect length, circumference, balance and fit.

And shrinkage does not necessarily happen evenly.

Different materials can respond differently across length and width, which means the garment may not simply become smaller. Its proportions can change.

This is especially important when a garment has been developed to tight tolerances.

A few percent of dimensional change may not sound significant.

Across a garment, it can be.

That is why fabric testing and finishing requirements should be considered before finalising production specifications rather than after the garment has already been approved.

The fabric can change the pattern

This is perhaps the most important point.

The pattern should not be developed independently of the material.

A pattern is a geometric system designed to create a three-dimensional garment.

The fabric determines how that geometry behaves when it is cut, sewn and worn.

Change the material, and you may need to reconsider the pattern.

The amount of ease.

The seam placement.

The construction.

The amount of support.

The shaping.

The finished measurements.

Sometimes the changes are subtle.

Sometimes they fundamentally alter the way the garment needs to be developed.

This is why replacing a fabric late in the development process can be more complicated than simply updating the material specification in a tech pack.

A new fabric may require technical development.

Why sampling can become misleading

One of the most common development situations is a sample that looks right in the development fabric but behaves differently in the intended production fabric.

The sample is approved.

The production fabric arrives.

The garment is cut again.

Suddenly the proportions feel different.

The designer may initially assume that the factory made a mistake.

But the issue may be that the pattern was validated against one material while production is taking place in another.

This is why the development fabric should be treated as a technical reference, not simply a placeholder.

If the final material has significantly different weight, stretch, drape or stability, the garment needs to be evaluated again.

The closer the development material is to the final production material, the more meaningful the fit and construction decisions become.

Fabric testing should inform development

Material testing does not need to be complicated to be useful.

The objective is to understand how the fabric is likely to behave during development and production.

Depending on the product, relevant information can include:

Fabric weight.

Stretch percentage.

Stretch direction.

Recovery.

Shrinkage.

Drape.

Dimensional stability.

Construction.

Finishing.

These properties provide context for the pattern developer.

They help answer a much more useful question than simply asking whether a fabric is "good."

The question is:

Is this fabric technically appropriate for the product we are trying to develop?

The most expensive fabric mistake is often made too early

Ironically, the most expensive material decisions are not necessarily made during production.

They are often made during development.

A fabric is selected because it looks right.

A pattern is developed around it.

A sample is produced.

The fit is adjusted.

Then the fabric changes.

Now the pattern needs to be reconsidered.

The sample needs to be reviewed again.

The tech pack needs to be updated.

The production timeline moves.

What looked like a simple material substitution has now affected several parts of the development process.

This is why material decisions should be integrated into product development rather than treated as a separate purchasing decision.

Good garment development connects material, pattern and fit

The best results happen when these decisions are considered together.

The material influences the pattern.

The pattern influences the fit.

The fit influences the construction.

The construction influences how the material behaves.

And all of these decisions influence the final product.

This is particularly important when developing collections rather than individual garments.

A brand may want consistency across several styles, but consistency cannot simply mean using the same measurements.

Different materials can require different technical approaches even when the visual language of the garments is related.

Technical development creates the framework that allows those differences to be managed without losing the identity of the collection.

The fabric is part of the product

A garment is not a pattern.

It is not a fabric.

It is not a tech pack.

It is the result of all of these elements working together.

That is why material selection belongs inside the technical development process.

When the fabric is understood early, pattern development becomes more informed. Fit decisions become more reliable. Sampling becomes more meaningful. And production specifications become more accurate.

The goal is not simply to find a fabric that looks like the one in the reference image.

The goal is to understand whether the material can deliver the product you are actually trying to build.
